25th Congress of the APSR

Session summary by field

Infection

COVID-19 is still a primary global health concern. At APSR 2021, experts from around the world will provide updates on the virus, including an overview and guidelines regarding the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19. EV16 and EV17 will discuss social and economic issues relating to COVID-19 and zoonotic diseases, while CS1 and CS2 will feature global leaders in basic and clinical research who will share their knowledge to inform problem-solving with respect to COVID-19. Underlying diseases, secondary infections, and the prevention of COVID-19 will be addressed at CS11, ETS13, and ETS24.

Cancer

The management of lung cancer is changing in response to emerging novel therapies, including molecular targeting agents and immune checkpoint inhibitors. At APSR 2021, EV7, CS6, and ETS22 will explore the current status and future direction of immune therapy. In addition, ETS17, ETS18, and ETS26 will consider cutting-edge cancer detection methods and treatments for patients with driver oncogene mutants. EV6, ETS21, and ETS25 will also be relevant for researchers and clinicians in the area of lung cancer.

Asthma

Research on asthma has focused on the mechanism and treatment of airway inflammation. Treatment-related topics of discussion will include systemic steroid treatment, steroid-resistant asthma, and refractory asthma as well as the development of biologics and new anti-inflammatory asthma treatments. Meanwhile, discussions of the mechanism will address the regulation of eosinophils as well as airway constituent cells, such as type 2 immune cells, basophils, mast cells, regulatory B cells, and airway epithelial cells, and the airway microbiome.

COPD

In regard to COPD, EV10 will explain the role of lung endothelial cell repair in the pathogenesis of emphysema. In the CS section, CS10, CS11, and CS12 will investigate many aspects of COPD management in telemedicine, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and for palliative oxygen management in the terminal stage of the disease. Moreover, CS14 will involve a lecture on current topics and future perspectives in the Asian-Pacific region. In the ETS section, ETS3, ETS10, ETS11, ETS12, and ETS16 will facilitate a large-scale discussion of COPD covering a range of topics, including basophils, the role of mitochondria, and sex-based differences in COPD. A presentation will also examine COPD and the microenvironment, and ETS22 will entail three lectures that target the pathophysiology of COPD.

Clinical Respiratory Medicine

These sessions will explore updates and real-life practices in treating various respiratory diseases in the Asian-Pacific region with which members of respiratory care teams should be familiar. Telemedicine has advanced drastically during the COVID-19 pandemic, though its effectiveness and limitations warrant discussion. Despite the significant symptom burden of respiratory diseases, some patients have limited access to adequate palliative care. CS9 will describe the impacts of respiratory symptoms that affect quality of life and outline updated palliative care management for various respiratory diseases. Furthermore, CS1, CS2, CS5, CS6, CS11, CS14, EV1, and EV3 will highlight the latest guidelines, current topics, and future perspectives with respect to pulmonary infection, asthma, lung cancer, pulmonary thromboembolism, interstitial pneumonia, and COPD.

Cell Molecular Biology

A variety of fascinating themes in the field of cell molecular biology will be presented, providing updates on the latest molecular pathology. Each session has three themes: the repair of pulmonary vascular endothelial cells in COPD pathology in EV (EV10), eosinophil control in CS (CS7), and single cell analysis (CS13) in CS.. In particular, the ES session will cover a variety of themes, such as the roles of mast cells, basophils (ETS 2, 10) of mitochondria (ETS11), and lung microenvironment homeostasis (ETS 16) in the formation of molecular pathology (ETS 2). The pathogenesis of respiratory diseases at the cellular level will also be discussed.

Environment / Climate Change

The topic of climate change and the environment was incorporated into the APSR 2021 programme after the onset of the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) to facilitate exploration of the causes of the disease and the creation of measures in society that can prevent its reoccurrence. EV14, EV15, EV16, EV17, and CS18 will span a wide range of subjects, such as the prevention of global warming and climate change, the reduction of global warming gas excretion and the promotion of absorption, the public health implications of the Paris Agreement, the conservation of natural ecosystems, deforestation and zoonosis, and the implications of COVID-19 for SDGs.

Gender / Career Development

Women who work in academic medicine and science consistently experience gender inequality stemming from complex structural, cultural, and institutional factors. To enable more women to pursue careers and leadership positions in such fields, it is essential to acknowledge the biases and obstacles that prevent gender equality. CS3, CS4, EV11, and EV12 will refer to previous studies on the impacts of gender inequality as well as successful programmes and practical actions that have been adopted to mitigate these issues. The Asian-Pacific region encompasses a diversity of races and ethnicities. In view of this, EV13 emphasises the importance of understanding biological differences and disparities in environmental and social factors that impact respiratory health.
